A Fashion Revolution: At Sao Paulo Fashion Week

Posted on 5th November 2012 | Sao Paulo Fashion Week Fall 2013

From bronzed Brazilians, to sexy supermodels, and colorful catwalks; it was a fashion revolution last week as Sao Paulo turned over a new page in the fashion calendar, presenting their collections for Fall/Winter 2013 at fashion week.

If there was a country that existed specifically for the world’s most sexy supermodels, we would probably give the gold medal to Brazil. For who can deny the abundance of hot models -- from Gisele, to Adriana Lima, Aline Weber, and Alessandra Ambrosio -- that just keep rolling out of the colorful South American giant. Need we say any more?

Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) kicked off last monday to show to the world its kaleidoscopic collections for Fall/Winter 2013. This may seem a little confusing, as the rest of the fashion world have recently finished presenting their Spring/Summer 2013 lines. But Brazil is set on kicking-off a new phase in fashion, allowing its designers more time to roll out their designs.

To coincide with the new season, SPFW took place at a new venue: the Villa Lobos Park, where 20 Brazilian designers pulled out all the stops to present their notoriously unique take on fashion, where colors, prints, and sexy trends took first prize!

A Colcci Winter

Last year, Colcci chose Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher and Victoria's Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio to open the seasonal show. This year, the 31-year-old Brazilian beauty, made a whistle-stop trip to her native country, where she was flown in specifically to attend a fashion party and walk again for Colcci.  Ambrosio took to the the catwalk dressed in a military-inspired black dress, and later, black two-piece brocade suit and midnight-blue shirt -- a far cry from the multi-million dollar lingerie she will be wearing at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in only a months time!

Meanwhile, other celebrity highlights came from Brazilian actress, Fernanda Lima, who showed up at SPFW to watch her boyfriend and former Versace model, Rodrigo Hilbert, walk the runway for Forum.

A Villaventura Halloween

In keeping with the theme of Halloween, models for Lino Villaventura took to the catwalk painted in heavy gothic makeup and eerie headwear, to accompany the theatrical costumes and voluminous gowns that hung from the zombie-looking figures that strut the runway.

Opening the collection with all-black; the look was not that dissimilar from the Fall 2012/13 collection which took inspiration from artist, Francis Bacon's, dark imagery, where the models wore masks, headdresses, and head pieces that resembled crowns. Lino Villaventura opened the Fall/Winter 2013 collection, with a male, androgynous model, who imitated scarring himself!

The SPFW international press team celebrate their daring fashion week

But Sao Paulo Fashion Week is more than just about fashion, previous years have seen the event marked by campaigns for noble causes like hunger, the prevention of cancer and Aids, and recycling of waste, as well as celebrating culture: The Spring 2008 collections honored the centenary of Japanese diaspora to Brazil.
