Be Dazzled by Supermodel Alek Wek’s Golden Gown
She’s stunning, she’s empowering, and she’s a supermodel with an incredible story. FashionTV caught up with Alek Wek at the DAS sisters’ Spring 2013 show for London Fashion Week. And here’s what she had to say.
Sudanese British supermodel Alek Wek (pronounced Uh Lek) was flown into London -- super-style -- for the London Fashion Week Spring 2013 season, following appearances on the New York catwalks just a few days earlier.
She is one of the world’s most recognisable models, known for her African beauty, cropped hair and catwalk confidence, and took to the London runways for eccentric and exotic designers.
Amongst them, were Dubai sisters and designers, Reem and Hind Beljafla, of DAS -- and Wek opened their show in a DAS-zling golden gown!

This season, marked DAS’ second appearance at Vauxhall Fashion Scout, London Fashion Week, with a Spring collection bold and rich culture. The runway looks took influence from Indian and Arabic cultures, with Arabic calligraphy embellished on the garments with a modern twist.
“I come from a family of five sisters, so when I saw the DAS girls I was very excited, they’re absolutely brilliant,” Wek said.
“I love all their prints in the fabrics are just so beautiful and the detailing.”
Just as she opened the show, Wek closed the show with African elegance, taking to the catwalk in a red blocking chiffon dress, beautified by a gold chain layered necklace. She looked stunning!
Wek, also made appearances at London Fashion Week for the Mad Hatter of British style, Philip Treacy, at his first catwalk show in a decade!Philip Treacy’s Spring 2013 Michael Jackson hat extravaganza at London Fashion Week
Wek, joined an all black cast of models and was the lucky one dressed in Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” costume, while sporting a diamante ‘Michael glove’ hat. Wek brought a surge of excitement and applause from the crowd as she worked the catwalk with the iconic piece (somehow) resting on her head!
