Double-00 Heaven: 50 Years of Bond Girls
For the past 50 years men have swooned over them and women have wanted to be like them. FashionTV celebrates 50 years of James Bond by taking a look back at the sexiest Bond girls who helped give the 00-agent his 7!
Who Runs The World? (Girls)
Can you believe it’s been 50 years since the first James Bond movie?? Well, actually -- so can we! It seems no matter which generation you’re from, everyone’s had a fantastical fling with one of the characters in a Bond movie. Especially the Bond Girls. And in celebration of this momentous feat, we’re giving the Girls a capital ‘G!’
Michael Weatherly behind-the-scenes “James Bond” by Giuliano BekorThe Bond Girl as we know her is beautiful and glamorous, with glossy hair, perfect curves, and a somewhat reckless attitude towards sex. She’s Bond’s love interest, can be the heroine or the villain, the aid or the assassin, but nonetheless will use her seductive femininity to get what she wants!
The first film, “Dr. No,” made its way to our cinema screens back in 1962 with the legendary Sean Connery cast as James Bond, and Swedish sex symbol, Ursula Andress -- considered by many to be the first and best -- playing his Bond Girl, Honey Rider.

Her infamous debut onto our screens came when she emerged from the crystal waters in an ivory bikini; and little did Andress know, would set the standards for future Bond Girls. She launched a bikini craze, which later would inspire Halle Berry’s citrus-orange La Perla bikini in “Die Another Day.”
The Classic Bond Girl
A Bond Girl’s style is meant to be able to change quickly into undercover spyware or even weaponry! Bond Girl costumes have seen names like Oscar de la Renta, Cavalli, Prada, Alaïa, Tom Ford and Frida Giannini for Gucci designing memorable costumes; while shoes by Gina, YSL and Jimmy Choo have made their mark on the screen; and lest we forget there has been NO shortage of Swarovski crystals!
FashionTV interviews the glamorous Casino Royale (2006) Bond girlsLooking back at the past 22 (soon to be 23) Bond movies, the Bond Girl’s look has changed significantly. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, glamor and chic ruled the roost, with the Girls dressing voluptuously. Just cast your minds back to Pussy Galore (“Goldfinger,” 1964) who wore cone bras with all her outfits, accentuating her womanly curves.

Back then, the Bond Girls were more of an aesthetic; dressing provocatively, wearing low-plunging dresses, athletic bikinis, and barely-there nightwear. But despite the emphasis on sexiness there has always been masculine elements to their outfits, like thick leather belts and fanny packs for holding weaponry.

Just cast your minds back to character Pam Bouvier’s power suits in “Die Another Day” (1989), henchwoman May Day’s severe leather hooded look in “A View To Kill” (1985), and seductive villainess Xenia Onatopp’s tight black crop tops, black army trousers, and gun holster in “Goldeneye” (1995) -- which marked a change in the Bond Girl image in the ‘90s.

From the innocent yet dangerous Honey Rider bikini, to the Sixties-chic wardrobe of Tracy di Vincenzo to Pussy Galore’s tailored and tomboyish look, monochrome swimsuits of Domino, and casino Girl glamor of Plenty O’Toole, there is an undisputed timelessness to the Bond Girls’ style.
FashionTV’s fav’s looks include Russian secret agent Anya Amasova’s weapon-hiding evening gowns, Wai Lin’s leather boiler suit, and Miranda Frost’s ice queen beaded dresses. Meanwhile, Vesper Lynds character brought us the revival of well-dressed, sophisticated Bond Girls... and we can’t wait to see what glamor will be hitting our screen for the much-anticipated new Bond film, Skyfall!
Skyfall -- starring Daniel Craig alongside Bérénice Marlohe and Naomie Harris as the 2012 Bond Girls -- is set to hit cinemas this October.
