Exclusive Interview with fashion photographer Martin Siebenbrunner

Posted on 3rd August 2012 | Photographers

FashionTV works around the clock with the world's best fashion photographers, bringing you exclusive interviews with the people responsible for some of the most breathtaking photoshoots out there.

Austrian photographer Martin Siebenbrunner comes from a family of photographers, honing in on his sense for aesthetics and photographic composition from an early age. He loves extreme poses, lighting and colors, capturing moments of seductive pictures in noble ambiance.

Siebenbrunner has recently been awarded with a gold medal from the FIAP (Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique,) one of the most important photography awards in the world.

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start out?

Growing up in a family of photographers, my mother told me to take a "real" profession. So I decided to study technologies. This was hard for me, because I was always in love with photography. After 20 years of working as an engineer, I decided to become a photographer. That's the whole story.

Which models or famous designers have you worked with in the past?

I have worked with over 400 models from all around the world. Celebrities from Austria and Germany like Kathrin Lampe or Germany’s Miss Universe Kristiana Rohder. Fashion productions for brands like Tiberius, Callisti or Bipone, as well as international labels like Prada, D&G and Gucci, for my own fashion productions.

What do you love about FashionTV?

As fashion photographer I am addicted to fashion. To see current and future trends is very important for me. In my studio, we always watch FashionTV to get an impression of what’s going on in the fashion and fashion photography world.

Which countries do you prefer to travel to, to do your work?

Living in Vienna/Austria. we don't have a sea and not so many sunny days. So I prefer summer locations, beaches, and palm trees. This year I did great shots in Portugal, Ibiza and Mallorca. I would love to work in Cape Town someday.

Which famous celebrity or model would you love to work with?

My all-time favorite is model Kate Moss. For me, she is one of the sexiest women in the world, even if she is over 30 and not the type of model you’d typically describe as a "sex bomb".She knows how to dress and how to present herself in an erotic way without it being overtly sexual.

According to your own beliefs, what should the mode/photographer relationship be like on set?

Most models I worked with are very professional. But you can't get 100%, if there isn’t a

good atmosphere. With a nice chat and some compliments I try to make feel the models good about themselves and their work so they can give me what I need for the photo.

Where do you get your inspirations?

If you are walking through life with open eyes, you can get inspirations everywhere. For my last project I found an old hospital. I put my models in straitjackets, and styled them with exclusive designer accessories, like Prada handbags, Swarovski jewelry and Louboutins. A madhouse of fashion was born; I call it "l'asile du luxe".

Tell us about a project you did that is very special for you?

Last year I made a photo series for a charity project called "Doctors For Disabled". These guys travel to countries like Kambodscha and Vietnam, helping mine victims (mostly children) with prosthesis. My pictures were about force and power. In one scene, there was an evil puppeteer, playing with his two puppets. At the end, the puppets were freed and had defeated the bad puppeteer. David won against Goliath.

Are you excited about FashionTV’s 15th anniversary?

15 years of fashion is amazing. I wish FashionTV will continue for the next 15, no... 150 years in the exact way they did in the past.

What will be your next project?

Next I will travel to Mallorca again for production on a photo series focusing on beachwear for a German fashion label. We will do some shoots in a traditional finca as well as some shots on a luxury yacht. I am really looking forward to this project.
