During the 1997 Milan S/S Fashion Week, Italian designer and legend, Gianni Versace, presented what would become his last collection. A few months after the collection’s debut, the designer was sadly murdered. Take a look at Versace’s last collection and try to imagine what the Versace Fashion House would be like today if he was still with us.

Gianni Versace was one of the most influential fashion designers in the nineties. He was born in southern Italy and as a young boy he would help his mother find significant stones, which she incorporated in her dress designs. When Gianni was 30 years old he was hired to design a leather and suede collection.

His designs attracted the attention of local fashion designers, and without knowing it Versace was taking his first steps into building the fashion empire we know today. Nowadays, Versace is one of the most prominent fashion houses in the world, and produces luxury and highly successful men’s and women’s lines, lavish accessories, high-quality make-up, fragrances, and even home furnishing.

Versace 1997 show:

Gianni Versace’s spring 1997 collection was full of vitality. Light yellows, purples, and oranges in silky fabrics along with elegant black and white lace dresses ruled the runway and would become iconic for the Versace name. The love of life, youthful spirit, and unique style of Gianni’s last collection made it one truly worth remembering. Back then, no one could have imagines the extent of the collection’s immortal status due to the unexpected and tragic circumstances.

On July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace was shot dead on the front steps of his Miami Beach house. The murder shocked fans and friends all over the world. At the time, top designer Karl Lagerfeld stated that Gianni “made the dream of youth his life.” As we all know that is not a simple thing to do, but ultimately we all agree with Lagerfeld and truly miss Gianni Versace’s impeccable designs.
