Time to shake up a caipirinha and get into the Brazilian spirit!
Think Rio, and you think of carnival, bountiful bikinis, and the Copacabana. So where better to be inspired for world fashion trends than the three-day fashion carnival that is Rio Fashion Week.
The week will kick into gear on November 7 at Pier Mauá, as 18 Brazilian fashion houses showcase their collections for Fall/Winter 2013. Join FashionTV on Facebook and Twitter as we bring you all backstage and front-row happenings live!
November marks new beginnings in the fashion calendar and follows in the footsteps of it’s big sister Sao Paulo Fashion Week, where Winter collections have been unveiled three months earlier than the rest of the world.
This season, artist and fashion illustrator Filipe Jardim was selected to conjure up the concept and design theme for Rio Fashion Week, which was inspired by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Jardim explains to FFW:
"I looked to the Casa das Canoas designed by Niemeyer, which is located in the heart of the Tijuca Forest. It is a place near my home. And despite Niemeyer’s fame, few people know [he designed it],” he comments.
Filipe is one of the most prestigious Brazilian illustrators, who has drawn for Hermès, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Forum, Coconut Water, Neon, and Converse, amongst others.

While bikinis are considered to be Brazilian’s bread and butter, Brazilian designers fall far from short of ideas when it comes to their Winter collections. Last Fall, we were treated to haute couture inspired looks of the ’40s and ’50s from Acquastudio on day one, and New York art-inspired pieces hit the catwalk for New York Fashion Week exhibitor, Alexandre Herchcovitch.
Meanwhile, New Order gave us a lot to think about as the Fall/Winter 2012 models took to the runway dressed in a number of futuristic looks inspired by aviation and ’60s mod culture. Though inspired by the swinging era, the collection was one of our favs, as futuristic shapes and metallic colors gave the look of the past a modern twist. Just look at those aircraft-shaped purses! #loveFuture-forward accessories appear on the New Order Fall/Winter 2012 catwalk at Rio Fashion Week
