Move Over Tokyo... It’s Time For Russian Fashion Week

In The News At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia

While the weather took a turn for the worse this week, Russian fashion week has been turning conversation away from the Winter gloom and over to the hot trends for next Spring! Last week FashionTV packed up our fake-furs and descended on the Russian capital for a slice of the fashion action.

Since Thursday, Moscow took center stage in the fashion calendar for the start of Russian fashion week. The hugely anticipated event has been gaining more and more attention with every season’s successes, this year marking the 25th seasonal exhibit since 2001. And if you missed any of your favorite runways, FashionTV has all the shows ready for your viewing at

So What’s Been Talk of the Town?

This week the headwear at Tatiana Parfionova was a sight to behold. Her Spring collection of layered dresses and tunics, embroidered with flowers, mermaids and swans were topped with some eye-popping headdresses for next season -- a far cry from the thick furs that are soon to take hat supremacy for the Russian Winter.

And how excited were we when we spotted Joan Smalls on the front-row! The perfect way to catch a close-up of the intricate detailing of this fantastical collection that drew inspiration from the historical legacy of the Russian Empire. Another fun celeb spot, was fashion blogger BryanBoy who turned up to do the fashion rounds.

Meanwhile, wacky outfit of the week came from Russian designer Anton Galetsky of Atelier Galetsky who opted for a more satirical take on fashion, dressing a model up in a sack-shaped garment printed with Burberry’s signature checks and emblazoned with the D&G label. Well that’s definitely one way to make a bit of noise!

The Atelier Galetsky Spring 2013 collection was inspired by works of contemporary artists whose art was inspired by current society issues. Galetsky said he wanted to put real thought into his clothes this season. Using high-end materials like wool, silk, leather, and cashmere, he created a fairly minimalist collection of whites and neutral tones.

While backstage, FashionTV’s trendspotters were busy snapping up the latest looks before they hit the runway, with braided crowns, voluminous up-dos, and white-out makeup trending all over the place... not dissimilar to Liu Fang’s Spring show at Paris Fashion Week, only last month!

Did we forget to mention Russian street style? Over the last few seasons a bevy of Russian beauties have joined the fashion carousel at fashion weeks across the globe; their dramatic style just as spectacular as their names are hard to pronounce!

They exude the pristineness that any designer could dream of, often mixing vintage with Haute Couture and RTW, making for the ultimate fashion cocktail. Names hitting the Russian street style lists include the likes of POP Editor-at-Large Miroslava Duma, Model Elena Perminova, fashion director of Tatler Russia Anya Ziourova, and fashion designer Vika Gazinskaya.
