Lindsey Wixson – The Model Who Dares To Defy Typical Beauty | FashionTV’s Model of the Week

Posted on 17th August 2012 | Model of the Week

Lindsey Wixson is one of the hottest top models these days. Yet if you would have asked her in middle school whether she would rule the fashion world, Wixson would have probably laughed. Wixson was born in Wichita, Kansas, and as a young girl, she always dreamed of becoming a lawyer or a chef.

As a flawless model, her unique look has garnered her much success, yet back in school, she was constantly teased by other kids. These experiences made Wixson very self-conscious about herself.

At the age of twelve, after some tried telling her she could be a model, Lindsey Wixson decided to give it a try. She looked into the experiences of other famous models like Kate Moss and Gisele, and decided to give it a try, quickly signing with a local modeling agency in Kansas. Once her parents understood that in order to succeed, their daughter needed to be in the center of the fashion world, they took a loan and quickly drove to L.A.

A few modeling agencies were convinced that Wixson’s unusual looks would not work well on the catwalks, but luckily, Marilyn Agency directors thought differently. Fifteen-year-old Wixson was signed immediately, and shortly after, famous fashion photographer Steven Meisel handpicked her for a fashion production for Vogue Italia – her first job as a model.

Rocking the Runway

Lindsey Wixson debuted during the Spring 2010 Cynthia Steffe fashion show at New York Fashion Week. That same season, at Milan Fashion Week, she opened the Prada show as an exclusive, making her one of the most talked about newcomers of the year. The young American model also closed the Miu Miu fashion show in Paris, again as an exclusive.

During the Fall 2010 season, Wixson continued her collaboration with Miu Miu and was chosen to open the brand’s fashion show in Paris. She also closed the Missoni and Sophia Kokosalaki fashion shows.

In May 2010, Wixson walked for Jason Wu’s resort collection, Oscar de la Renta and Yves Saint Laurent in New York.

The following seasons were very successful for Lindsey Wixson. She opened and closed some very prestigious fashion shows in Milan, Paris and New York. Her resume now includes Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Christian Dior Couture, Missoni, Moschino and many others.

Cover Girl

Though Wixson’s first step in the fashion industry was posing for Steven Meisel, she had to work hard before she got her first fashion magazine cover. In 2010, she was chosen to be on the cover of i-D magazine’s cover, photographed by Emma Summerton.

In 2011, the young model landed on four fashion magazine covers with three of them photographed by fashion photographer Terry Richardson.  Those covers were pre-fall i-D magazine, Purple magazine and the Winter edition of V magazine. On her 4th magazine cover,  Wixson posed for Will Davidson during a shoot for Muse.

Apart from magazine covers, Wixson appeared in many editorials and fashion productions for magazines like Vogue, Elle, Dazed & Confused, W and LOVE.

Ad Star

In 2010, Lindsey Wixson’s unique beauty was featured in her first campaigns. That year she was chosen to be the face of Miu Miu, John Galliano and she also signed a cosmetics contract with Jill Stuart.

The following year, Wixson was announced as the new face of Alexander McQueen, and she took part in a Mulberry ad campaign and signed a contract with Versace Vanitas.

In 2012, she modeled for the Just Cavalli and Mulberry Spring ad campaigns.

Fashion Forward

Lindsey Wixson continues to aim high and if her dreams come true, she will retire from modeling, and become a pilot. Until then, Wixson remains one of the most successful models on and off the catwalk. Her gapped front teeth and “bee-stung lips” have become her most recognizable trademarks.  She has already reached her peak as a professional model and still continues to enrapture us all.
