The Prince Of Darkness: Meet Designer Gareth Pugh
He’s a Paris Fashion Week headliner, designed costumes for the Pet Shop Boys, and now teamed up with Elton John for the Grey Goose Winter Ball. Join FashionTV as we discover 5 fabulous facts about the young, dark, and mysterious designer Gareth Pugh.
Age: 31
Star Sign: Virgo
Fashion Fun: To Pugh’s shock, he discovered that a fashion blogger tattooed one of his Spring 2007 creations on her arm!
1. Breaking the Fashion World

Labeled by some as the “new Alexander McQueen,” the British prince of darkness is one of the worlds most celebrated designers who made his name in the fashion world with his gothic graduate collection in 2003. The collection caught the eye of Dazed and Confused senior fashion editor who put one of his concepts on the magazine’s cover not long after.

His signature look is defined by predominantly black collections, incorporating religious iconography, gothic theatre, geometric cuts, leathers, and fur.
2. Pugh the Perfectionist
Do you believe that you can tell a lot about a person by their star sign? Well, in the case of British designer Gareth Pugh, being a Virgo and a perfectionist seem to go hand-in-hand. Which is why the Sunderland-born designer challenged the fashion world by using movies as well as catwalk shows to get across his message. And beautiful they are too!
Pugh shocked the fashion world in 2009 by using London filmmaker Ruth Hogben to direct fashion films instead of producing catwalk shows. Speaking with New York Magazine, Pugh explained that he uses film to keep him in control over how people see his collections -- leaving no room for stylists mistakes (!) -- and making sure the outfits are put on models to perfection.
3. Time for Fire
Hmmm... See any similarities? Well, maybe that’s because Rick Owens is Pugh’s mentor. They first started working together when Pugh interned with Owen in Paris, and today they are good friends and still work closely. What’s more, a lot of what Pugh produces for his shows is made in the same factory as Owens! Check out Pugh’s Fall 2012/13 show and see if you can spot the differences!
4. Pugh for The Pet Shop Boys
This year has been full of fun and collaborations for Pugh, who was selected to design the Pet Shop Boys costumes for the 2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony.
The Pet Shop Boys rocked the show dressed in Pugh’s incredible avant garde creations -- taking to the stage donning black striped suits, visors, and striking cone hats, escorted by bikers on acid-tangerine bicycles and matching headpieces.
The look was drawn from the set and costumes designed by Pugh for a new ballet, “Carbon Life.”
5. Pugh in the News
Good old Pugh has teamed up with none other than Elton John to design a portable bar which will be auctioned at the musician’s annual Grey Goose Winter Ball. All proceeds from the event will go to the Elton John Aids Foundation.
The annual A-list bash is the ultimate glitzy event which brings together the very best from fashion, art, and music -- with an envy worthy guestlist to include the likes of Elizabeth Hurley, George Michael, and Kate Moss who will be sippin’ on Grey Goose martinis while rubbing shoulders with fellow hotshots.
Stay tuned with FashionTV and we’ll bring you all the news from the star-studded party taking place in December! It’s nearly time to start choosing an outfit!
