The Return Of Campaigner And Designer Kenneth Cole

Posted on 30th October 2012 | Designers

He is known for his politically charged ad campaigns, being on the front line of fashion trends, and as a humanitarian spokesman, but American designer and fashion maven Kenneth Cole is back in New York to give a preview of his Spring 2013 lookbook.

Celebrating his label’s 30th birthday this year, designer Kenneth Cole has revealed he is returning to the runway at New York Fashion Week after a six year absence. FashionTV got an exclusive first look at his Spring 2013 collection presentation.

The concept was to take a middle eastern north African aesthetic, do a little design magic, mix it with a pinch of American urban beauty, and voila! You have a modern, contemporary, and cool Kenneth Cole look for next Spring.

Cole has achieved fashion royalty status, with his rise to the top of the American fashion charts faster than the speed of sound, all the while setting the standards sky high for his contemporaries. But as well as design, Cole is not one to shy away from taking a political jab at society.

Famed Cole campaigns make play on expressions with fashion. Cast your minds back to his controversial campaign “What Do You Stand For” which asked people to chose their stand on a number of hot topics such as abortion, gay marriage, gun control, and war. In 2011, a billboard showed a model holding a selection of Kenneth Cole bags, with the words “Should it be a woman’s right to choose if she’s the one carrying it?” on the wall behind her.

Other eyebrow-raising campaigns have included a now-notorious tweet during the time of the Egyptian uprising, saying “Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard about our new Spring collection is now available online,” he later apologised and removed it from the site.

“Some advice before you go to the polls #throwbackthursday (first seen in '95)” @KennethCole

But Cole, will never be one to shy away from political issues as he is committed to provoking and inspiring people through fashion. In a recent interview Cole explains that using his fame and fashion, is his way to say what’s on his mind in a number of creative ways.
