The Glamazon Is Back: Versace Returns To Haute Couture
Did you gasp in awe when you saw the most recent Versace Spring/Summer 2012 haute couture collection during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week? Was it because the models sizzled down mirrored steps in sky-high stilettos and breathtaking gowns of form-fitting laser-cut silk and satin with gold metal insets sculpted on their hips? Was it because the models hit couture poses in intricate Swarovski crystal beaded dresses of eye-catching neon colors like acid yellow, orange, and gray?
Or was it because Versace haute couture was back after an 8-year hiatus?
Donatella Versace proved her 2012 Versace Haute Couture collection in Paris was a force to be reckoned with. While she only sent 15 looks down the golden staircase instead of the typical 35 that are often seen at couture shows, those 13 left the crowd in wonder.
And it was the first show on the first day of Paris Couture Fashion Week.
In the front row, celebs like Diane Kruger and Cameron Diaz sat proudly, but Donatella Versace can also count Nicki Minaj, Uma Thurman, and Blake Lively as devote followers of the brand. “You never know what you’re going to see with her. There are a lot of designers who have their standard thing that you do and her stuff, she always has incredible shapes and incredible fits but you never know what colors or patterns or you know, paillettes or beading she’s going to add,” says Blake Lively. “I love that. It’s always a surprise.”
FashionTV caught the enchanting show on film complete with the rousing Tosca aria in the background.
History of Versace – Haute Couture
“The world needs glamour and I missed couture,” Donatella Versace said of her reasoning for the return. “Madame Versace’s return after all this time shows that haute couture is not in the past. Versace knows they need couture,” French Couture President Didier Grumbach told Associated Press.
Thus, she created strong, “warrior women” who looked just a bit uncomfortable in their tight TIGHT gold metal strapped numbers where bodices were dipped in sequins and crystals. Perhaps it was the wake-up call that couture needed this Spring/Summer 2012 season, but what of her and her late brother's past shows?
Apparently Donatella Versace never stopped couture presentations, but instead, opted for “low-key still-life presentations with sittings editors only,” Women’s Wear Daily reported. Now, they’re back capitalizing on what made them so great in the past. While Gianni Versace started the brand in 1978, it wasn’t until 1989 that he presented his first haute couture showcase in Paris with Atelier Versace. Prior to his creation of Atelier Versace, Gianni Versace collaborated with La Scala Theatre and numerous ballet and theater productions. Versace Couture is also part of the high-end portion of the Versace company.
Today, Atelier Versace is worn by socialites, VIPs and red carpet stars. Most recently, Angelina Jolie wore Atelier Versace to the 2012 Golden Globes where she was deemed one of the night’s best dressed.
No one knows why Versace left the haute couture calendar in 2004. Perhaps it was the idea that opulence was overrated and showing off couture wasn’t “in vogue.” Or maybe personal and economic difficulties made it hard for the head designer to maintain her glamorous climb to the top. Well, she may have been gone then, but she’s back and better than ever! Fashion media publications assume it’s because she hit up a mass market with the Versace for H&M collection and wanted to prove to the world that she is still as couture as ever.
Whatever, the case, FTV and Versace fans everywhere are excited for Versace’s new era of high society allure. “She’s able to take the DNA of what Gianni was and make it her own, but still you feel Gianni in a big way,” Interview magazine Editorial Director Fabien Baron told Style.com
If you can take anything from the Spring/Summer 2012 couture collection showing at Paris Couture Fashion Week, it’s that Donatella Versace’s high-end Italian glamour is here to stay.
