Got the post fashion week blues? Do not despair! Today, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo kicks off, and welcomes a week of unique and innovative looks from over 40 Japanese and international designers for the Fall 2013-14 season. Here we go. He-llo To-ky-o!
While not in the list of the world’s four fashion capitals, Tokyo is quickly earning its title as one of the most eclectic and fashion-forward cities in the world. One need only take a look at the major fashion weeks -- New York, London, Milan, and Paris -- to see just how much designers are turning to the East for inspiration; as are celebrity’s for those one-of-a-kind pieces.
With fashion greats from Prada to Pucci, Mugler to John Galliano, Hermes and Lanvin, choosing the East as a point of reference for this Spring: presenting their take on the classic kimono, using origami-like folds in tailoring, opting for oriental prints, and working with sumptuous silks -- Japan has become a hotbed not only for its inspirations but mega creative talents.
And this season, there is plenty to get excited about. From the anticipated theatrical performances at Alice Auaa, to more traditional tailoring from Atsushi Nakashima, a collection of master knitwear from Yasutoshi Ezumi, and the latest offerings from Matohu: always a highlight. Meanwhile, Jun Okamoto remains high on the “ones to watch list,” last season opting to tell a fashion story through a ballet performance.
As for those interested in the fashion party circuit, the last day of fashion week will be celebrated in serious style, as VERSUS TOKYO, will host an all-night celebration that mixes up music with fashion at the highrise Shibuya Hikarie mall.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo will run from 17-23 March at Shibuya Hikarie. WATCH the LIVE streaming here!
