She was the youngest model to ever appear on a Vogue cover, was romantically linked to Heath Ledger, and is now a high-flying Hollywood star. Meet FashionTV’s Model of the Week, Gemma Ward.

Though many of you will be screaming from the rooftops that this Perth-born beauty is no longer “officially” a model; with the recent screening of ‘The Great Gatsby’ at Cannes Film Festival, we thought it the perfect moment to take a look back at the gorgeous Australian’s incredible career. She did after all land the role of “Languid Girl” alongside Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio in the Baz Luhrmann adaptation.

FashionTV takes you on a journey as we tell the tale of Ward’s transition from top model to top movie star in just a few short years.

Becoming a Model

Who could resist Ward’s doll-like features, piercing blue eyes, and platinum blonde hair? Well for one model scout he simply couldn’t, as Ward sat in the audience of Australian TV show “Search for a Supermodel,” where she had come to support friends. After being convinced to participate, and despite not winning, she was signed to Vivien's Fox agency and made her catwalk debut as an exclusive at the Spring 2004 Prada show in Milan.

This would mark the beginning of an extravagant and ambitious career for the fresh faced model, who went on to become one of the most sought after runway models of her time, feature on over 30 Vogue covers worldwide, as well as being named in the Forbe’s “World’s Top Earning Models” list by the age of 19. And this was just the beginning...

After making her runway debut, Ward was chosen to feature as the new face of Jil Sander in Spring 2004 shot by Nick Knight, as well as Prada’s ad shot by Steven Meisel. This instantly marked her on the international fashion scene and in September 2004, Ward was selected by Anna Wintour to feature on her first Vogue cover, at the age of 16 -- the youngest model to date to be given such an honour. She would later go on to star in campaigns for Jil Sander, Hermes, Valentino, Burberry, Christian Dior, and others; replacing the likes of supermodel Kate Moss and Stella Tennant along the way.

Reaching for the Stars

Ward, however, always had her heart set on more than just modelling and chose to steer her career in the direction of acting. In 2007, the super stunner decided to quit modelling in favour of Hollywood, and has since landed roles in seven movies to include ‘The Black Baloon’ (2008), ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ (2011), and most recently roars back to the 20s in Luhrmann’s box-office hit ‘The Great Gatsby’ (2013).

The weekend, get a glimpse of it all -- models included -- as FashionTV showcases the best of the Cannes 2013 red carpet. Here are some of our favorite model looks from the film festival.

Joan Smalls took our breath away in a long-sleeve lace gown in powder pink with a deep neckline from Emilio Pucci for the premiere of Cleopatra. It wasn’t overpowering, and it wasn’t over-the-top but that made the look just right for Cannes.

While some models use “Throwback Thursday” as a way to share with Instagrammers their career highlights and often more youthful looking snaps – others, like Doutzen Kroes takes it quite literally as she throws us back to her childhood days... and in doing so, gives hope to us all!!

You need only take a look at some of Doutzen Kroes’ goofy childhood pictures to realize that despite the Victoria’s Secret model’s frightfully amazing genes, she too had a little style-challenged spell.

Kroes takes us back to her carefree childhood days when the biggest challenge was riding a bicycle, not rocking the runway, with photos of her and her sister playing outside, or bearing a goofy grin while wearing pigtails and dungarees.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, the stunning mother-of-one hasn’t forgotten to throw in a few gorgeous pictures of herself too!

Yes, that’s right we’re still in Cannes for the 66th annual film festival, the red carpet is rolled out, and more and more celebrities are arriving for their photocalls. Have you been celeb-spotting too?

On day five, the weather took a turn for the better and so too did the red carpet turnout! It was the day that the Coen Brothers’ screened their latest film, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis,’ which features an all-star cast to include our new girl-crush, Carey Mulligan. And, as to be expected, the royal carpet was awash with the industry’s most gorgeous and glamorous for the occasion too.

We were treated to Bollywood royalty Aishwarya Rai (in Elie Saab Couture) and Chinese actress Zhang Yuki (in Roberto Cavalli), Kirsten Dunst looked picturesque (in Michael Van Der Ham) and was joined by boyfriend, the gorgeous Garrett Hedlund, who also features in the new movie.

And then there was one, no two. ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ star Justin Timberlake got the crowd in a frenzy as he and wife Jessica Biel arrived at the screening of the film; Biel dressed in an elegant Marchesa gown and diamond-encrusted snake necklace and Timberlake donning his suave new crooner look and bow-tie.

But an unexpected red carpet surprise came in the form of loved-up Nicole Kidman showing some serious public displays of affection with her beau, Keith Urban, as they had a smooch in front of the world's media.

Meanwhile, Cannes favorite Eva Longoria hosted the Global Gift Gala, and this time made sure she was wearing her underwear too! See Longoria’s sheer black sexy number as she poses with burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese in the clip below:

The Most Stylish Action Heroes: From Bruce Lee To Van Damme

When you think about action films and martial arts, fashion and good looks are not the first things that come to mind. But think again, and out of all the movie genres, action films are in fact very visual and have a lot to do with styling and fashion too.

Action heroes have always been good looking, take for example the charm of Sean Connery, the bursting muscles of Arnold Schwarzenegger, or the beguile of Bruce Willis. And though style, clothing, and accessories are not the main focus; they have always been part of the package, even if most of the accessories are guns and knives!

So, who are the most handsome/stylish martial arts stars?

5. Everybody loves Bruce Lee

People are fanatic about Bruce Lee, a cult movie legend of the 70s, whose persona has lived on since his tragic death. A lot of people don't realize this, but Lee was actually born in Chinatown San Francisco, which might explain why he was the one who introduced the mass audiences to Asian martial arts.

In his movies Lee was always super stylish -- take for example his iconic film Enter the Dragon, his yellow training suit will be remembered for decades and received numerous tributes, especially in Tarantino's ‘Kill Bill’ series.

4. Do you remember Michael Dudikoff?

Mainly known for his role as the American Ninja in the 80s cult five-film series. This blue-eyed boy brought a lot of sensitivity and heroism to the ragged ninja genre in his role as “Private Joe Armstrong” and was also very popular with the ladies too. The movie was a box office hit and Dudikoff will always be remembered as the sweetest ninja ever!

3. Wesley Snipes Means Business

Wesley Snipes is famous for so many good action roles from the a vengeful vampire in the Blade series, to his role opposite Sylvester Stallone in Demolition Man. And he’s also a great actor and a good looking chap, starring as a genuine ladies man in such films as Jungle Fever, White Man Can't Jump and One Night Stand, making him the ultimate candidate for a stylish action star.

2. The Next Generation: Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy is such a powerful performer that in some of his films you can't even tell its him. From his fearless and ruthless role playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises to his fierce and sensitive acting in Warrior. Whether he wants to or not, Hardy is already marked as the future of action stars and after landing the role in the upcoming Mad Max renewal, his path to glory is half way paved. And you just need to see a glimpse of him to see that he has it all- the muscle, the looks, the style- Tom Hardy is the whole package (for both men & women).

1. “The Muscles from Brussels:” Jean Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme has always been a crowd pleaser with his good looks, great moves, and serious style. JCVD was the man that confirmed his A-class action hero status when he was chosen to feature in The Expendables 2 in 2012, a film that pays tribute to and brought together all the heavyweight heroes of the genre.

Van Damme built his career in cult films such as Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Universal Soldier and later continued to expand his career starring in the artistic film JCVD and also in Soldiers, which he directed.

Van Damme is due to star in a new action film and TV series from FashionTV Films, “Luxury Meets Justice.”

With torrential downpours threatening to flood the red carpet, it might just be the soggiest May that Cannes Film Festival has ever seen, but that hasn’t stopped the A-listers from looking any less glamorous -- come rain or shine. Scroll down for the video.

Day four at the French Riviera, and yet more faces appeared on the coveted carpet to plug their movies, or simply get in on the glamour action; some appearances went smoothly, others with a few hiccups!

For the premiere of ‘Jimmy P: Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian’ celebrities like Doutzen Kroes (in Calvin Klein) Cheryl Cole (in Zuhair Murad), and Eva Longoria (in Atelier Versace) took the best dressed spotlight and were joined by Steven Spielberg and Benicio Del Toro for the screening of Arnaud Desplechin's latest film.

Meanwhile, the anticipated arrival of ‘The Hunger Games’ stars, Jennifer Lawrence and super stud Liam Hemsworth got the bulbs in a flashing frenzy, as Lawrence arrived in a demure black and white Christian Dior gown and her hair styled in relaxed and free-flowing.

But for one, their red carpet appearance did not go according to plan. ‘Desperate Housewives’ star, Longoria, accidentally revealed to the world that she had gone commando under her mint Versace gown, as she hoisted up the dress to avoid the wet carpet, but instead exposed more flesh than she intended with a dangerously high split! This Chinese actress and singer is a Cannes Film Festival favorite, and has been rocking the red carpet in her gorgeous gowns right from the very start. The star of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ hasn’t let the downpours stop her from looking like a princess, changing between a lemon Elie Saab gown at the ‘Jeune & Jolie’ premiere to powder blue Ulyana Sergeenko Couture at the Trophee Chopard party; this lady has a clear penchant for pastels. But it was on Saturday that Bingbing truly stunned in an ivory crystal Valentino gown which she wore to accept The Hollywood Reporter’s International Artist of the Year award.

Sonam Kapoor

Former model and Indian actress Sonam Kapoor caught our attention not once, but twice at Cannes with her red carpet attire. First up, she arrived at ‘The Great Gatsby’ premiere dressed like an Indian goddess in traditional attire but with a contemporary twist. The Bollywood actress wore an Anamika Khanna couture lace sari that had pearls embedded on it, which she teamed with a kundan nath (nose ring) and long gold embroidered cape jacket. Her second magical moment, however, was completely opposite, taking on a Western look with a Dolce & Gabbana floral strapless gown that made her look like a proper princess! We have a feeling she is going to give Aishwarya Rai a run for her money this year.

Zhang Yuqi

Chinese actress Zhang Yuqi is stealing the show with her beautiful and bold red carpet looks this year, mixing it up between a big ball gown by Alexander McQueen, chartreuse silk taffeta by Ulyana Sergeenko Couture, and something subtler but nonetheless sexy by Roberto Cavalli for the opening of the Coen Brothers movie, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis.’

What Asian beauty list is complete without the stunning Bollywood diva and former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai? This year, Rai has now made it to her 12th annual Cannes Film Festival and brought her gorgeous 18-month-old daughter to the occasion too! She arrived on the red carpet on day five, just in time for the screening of the Coen Brothers latest release wearing a black lace Elie Saab Couture gown and looked classic, elegant, and divine. She later appeared at the evening gala of ‘Bombay Talkies’ celebrating a 100 years of Indian cinema and opted for more traditional attire, dressed in a black and gold Sabyasachi lehenga-sari for the event. Rai’s Cannes red carpet style has evolved over the years and embraces everything from glamorous mermaid gowns, to traditional saris, and short and simpler looks.

Freida Pinto

Indian actress Freida Pinto has been shaking up the style stakes this year at Cannes. The 28-year-old stunner has channeled everything from Golden Age glamour both in form of a shimmering embellished dress and 20s updo for the ‘Jeune & Jolie’ premiere to perfectly pink in a custom-made Gucci gown for ‘The Great Gatsby’ screening. And despite the rain, this Indian glamour puss knows how to put on a brave smile!

As the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival continues to roll out the red carpets, the first 24-hours were more eventful than we could have hoped for -- with both on-carpet and off-carpet drama!

Day two saw Sofia Coppola’s premiere of the ‘Bling Ring’ followed by a classic Riviera heist where over $1 million worth of Chopard jewels were stolen from a hotel room; a man fired a start pistol sending actors running for cover, and all-the-while the red carpet kept on reeling in the A-listers in their fancy frocks!

Day three, brought some new faces to the red carpet for the turnout of the highly anticipated Asghar Farhadi “La Passe” movie premiere. Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes dressed in Atelier Versace for the event and joining her on the red carpet was fellow L’Oreal spokesmodel Eva Longoria, who stunned in a golden Zuhair Murad Couture gown with open back detailing and diamond ear cuffs.

Meanwhile, star of ‘La Passe’ Bérénice Bejo bloomed in white Alexis Mabille Couture which was elegantly topped off with a navy blazer giving her red carpet look a masculine-feminine edge -- “Nous adores!”

Doll-Like Smokey Eyes & Arched Brows

To have authentic 20s makeup your eyes will become rounded and doll-like; use layers of browns and blacks, greys and the occasional green. First up, let's find out how to create the perfect grey-black eyeshadow look.

HOW TO | EYES: Apply a soft satin grey-colored eyeshadow on your eyelids; blend the color out into the socket with the highest part of the shadow being in the middle of the lid. Apply just a touch of shadow under your bottom lashes, blending the edges. Use black kohl eye pencil to draw inside the waterline rim of your eye. Curl your lashes and mascara to both the top and bottom lashes making sure to focus on lengthening the lashes at the center of your eye lid.

HOW TO | BROWS: In the 20s, eyebrows were long and arched with many women often using an eyebrow pencil to draw them in; in Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan’s eyebrows are also slightly elongated. Use an eyebrow pencil in the same shade as your natural eyebrow color. Gently fill in the gaps by brushing the pencil upwards in the direction of the hair. Continue to do this even once you pass your natural eyebrows, so that the length passes the corner of your outer eye. If your eyebrows are not naturally rounded towards the middle, cover some of your eyebrow with foundation and draw the arched shape on top.

Red Cherry Lips

For a full-on glamorous evening look, a red matte lipstick was worn in the 20s. The shape of the lips is focused on the Cupid’s bow, meaning drawing it super pointed.

HOW TO: To get the iconic red lip, apply a red lipstick to your lips straight from the lipstick, and exaggerating the cupids bow. Take a single piece of paper and blot your lips, leaving them with a matte finish.

Translucent Skin

Skin was translucent in the 20s, and slightly blushed with a pretty pink on the cheeks.

HOW TO: Use a foundation that matches your skin tones and apply to the whole face. Apply a translucent powder to the cheekbones and just under the brow bone. Apply a rosy colored blush by dabbing a lipstick onto the apples of your cheeks, and then blend the color up towards your temples. Finally add the 20s beauty mark to your face, by pushing the tip of a black eyeliner into your skin

Flapper Faux Bob

Twenties hair is all about the bob and jeweled headbands!

HOW TO: Create a side-parting and straighten your hair, making sure to curve the hair inwards. Separate your hair into three parts (the back part of your hair is one, and the front is separated into two parts by the side parting). Start by spraying the back part of your hair with fixing spray, roll the hair under and pin it to your head. Repeat this with the front two pieces of your hair. Finish the look with a jeweled accessory, something luxurious and sparkly placed on top of the hair!

Cannes Film Festival: The Great Gatsby Movie Premiere and Opening Ceremony Fashion

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival has officially kicked off with the Roaring Twenties, plenty of stars, and the most glamorous red carpet fashion. On hand for all the festivities, is our 24/7 style channel FashionTV, which is planning its own Red Carpet Lounge next week for some of the best and most exclusive events in Cannes.

The FashionTV Red Carpet Lounge won’t begin until May 20, but the stars are already out and dressed in their fashionable best for photocalls, the Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony, and the premiere of the movie on everyone’s mind: The Great Gatsby!

Adding some uber-stylish fashion to the red carpet is actress Nicole Kidman, who’s on the jury panel this year alongside Steven Spielberg, Christoph Waltz, and others. Kidman has already been shining in brands like Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior. Speaking of the Christian Dior brand, we’ve already seen plenty of celebs on the red carpet in Christian Dior haute couture including Julianne Moore, Zhiyi Zhang, and yes, Carey Mulligan, the star of Great Gatsby.

Other international stars took glamorous walks down the red carpet during the Opening Ceremony. Though the weather wasn’t too helpful (it was pouring rain and the stars were helped by many an umbrella holder, celebs like Solange Knowles, Fan Bingbing, Georgia May Jagger, Cara Delevingne and Audrey Tatou shined on the red carpet. Audrey Tatou wore a frosted organza and silk chiffon gown by up and coming designer Yiqing Yin that we’re told took over 400 hours to make.

Freida Pinto wowed as she always does in a bold color by Gucci. Cara Delevinge made a statement in Burberry and struck a fine model pose. Georgia May Jagger was a wonderful surprise in Roberto Cavalli. Solange Knowles went for Stephane Rolland while Fan Bingbing went for a custom made Louis Vuitton gown. It’s been said that this is the first time the French brand has created a gown especially for an Asian actress.

Of course, the biggest news of the evening (besides Nicole Kidman’s stunning Dior dress) was the premiere of the much talked about film The Great Gatsby. The stars that came out did not disappoint. Carey Mulligan also wore Christian Dior Couture, though her gown was a minimalist pink color that we’re not used to seeing from the fashionista. Isla Fisher was eye popping in Oscar de la Renta. The men cleaned up nicely with Tobey Maguire wearing Saint Laurent, Leonardo DiCaprio looking dapper in a three-piece suit and Joel Edgerton in Ferragamo.

As the world awaits the approaching wave of fashion weeks (men’s), Karl Lagerfeld sent us to the East, where Chanel held its Cruise Pre-Spring 2014 Collection show in Singapore. Scroll down to watch the show.

It was a relatively quiet affair by Chanel standards: No giant wind turbines, Scottish palaces, or gargantuan globes to open the show. But, for Karl Lagerfeld the rustic setting of a disused former nutmeg plantation in Singapore, was the idyllic venue for the unveiling of Chanel’s mid-season Cruise collection.

As the lights were lifted and the French 50s soundtrack awoken, models including Cara Delevingne, Lindsey Wixson, and Stella Tennant paraded onto the catwalk for an audience of fashion’s highest flyers.

“Today the Cruise collection is not only about travelling any more but we (Chanel) still travel because we show in all parts of the world,” explains Lagerfeld in a Chanel interview. “We’ve done Europe, we’ve done America, so it was time for the Eastern part of the World.”

The collection was subtle in palette and in style, with the opening looks vaguely inspired by designs that Chanel used in her first knit collection. This season, Lagerfeld chose to take a step back from a quantiful use of color and opted for a quieter, limited palette of beige, white, black, and navy -- keeping things simple, sophisticated, and sufficient.

Shapes were boxy yet feminine, as Lagerfeld added new proportions to the collection including long skirts that were swathed, opened, and tailored to make them look good with heels -- something that he believes is hard to achieve.

While louder looks came in the form of black Lacquer painted on feathers and ruffles in an abstract splotching effect -- as worn by Delevingne -- as well as use of light-reflecting fabrics (not shiny!) that Lagerfeld describes as good for the complexion. Who are we to disagree?

Chanel No.5 Bottle Bag

Other new nuances from the Pre-Spring 2014 Chanel lookbook included the famous Chanel No.5 fragrance bottle designed as a handbag, while jewelery was military-inspired, using heavy chains, metals, and -- as Lagerfeld points out -- fake diamonds because Chanel was famous for mixing-up authentic and faux elements in her collections.

In and amongst the fashion crowd, was avid Chanel fan Dakota Fanning who watched on from the front row which included Carine Roitfeld and Anna Mouglalis.

“I think Karl does a great job of keeping Chanel alive, but at the same time its still so cool, young, fresh, and new,” comments Fanning.

Clothing brand Faconnable sponsored the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament with the infamous match between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic ended Rafael Nadal's winning streak by beating the 8-time defending champion in the final. But that did not stop fashion lovers from enjoying the tournament and showing up for the matches in chic Faconnable items.

The Gala was beautiful and many celebrities turned out for the occasion including Prince Albert II, Antonia Dell'Atte (former supermodel and Italian TV Personality), Lourdes Garzon (Editor-In-Chief, Vanity Fair Spain), and naturally Nadal.

Model stunner, Irina Shayk, knows just how to work the red carpet with the right amount of spice! Whether opting for a nude curve-enhancing fishtail gown or daring red Roberto Cavalli dress with thigh-high slit for the “Killing Them Softly” Premiere, Shayk is always one of the most dazzling red carpet belles.

Anja Rubik | To The Thigh & Beyond!

With legs that seemingly go on forever, her piercing blue eyes, and blonde locks Anja Rubik opted for a gorgeous black Roberto Cavalli dress for the Cannes red carpet. And yes, she was strong competition on the thigh-high slit with the tip just peaking below her hipline, showing her finest assets with all the sass and confidence, well... of a supermodel! Rubik topped the look with gorgeous gold snake-like sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti.

Natasha Poly | Perfectly Spliced

And over to Russian beauty Natasha Poly we go! Last year, Poly took our breath away when she arrived at the “Cosmopolis” premiere dressed in a stunning red Roberto Cavalli gown with deep-plunging neckline and cut-out in all the right places! And with such a bold look, its only natural to opt for equally bold bling, which she did, accessorising her look with an Alexander McQueen knuckle-duster clutch and dazzling diamond earrings.

Ashley Smith | Simply Does It

American model Ashley Smith channeled pure white elegance at Cannes, opting for a beautiful Marilyn Monroe-esque look. She showed us how to let the dress do the talking as she arrived on the red carpet in a strapless gown, her hair loosely-curled to the side, porcelain skin, and red lips adding old Hollywood glamour nuances to her red carpet look. It was simple and stunning.

Karolina Kurkova | Going For Gold

A golden sight to behold,model Karolina Kurkova dazzled in a gorgeous gold Roberto Cavalli dress for the amFAR gala, a brave choice you might think, but in fact the theme of the event was drama -- so dramatic her outfit was! The annual gala is held to raise funds for Aids research and this year will be hosted by Carine Roitfeld and Naomi Campbell with a gold theme and the red carpet dedicated to Elizabeth Hurley.

Photographer Awards 2013 At Cannes: Vote For The Best Fashion Film!

FashionTV is super excited for Cannes Film Festival this year, as we will be hosting the most glamorous events from our very own Red Carpet Lounge at the Majestic Barriere Hotel, in Cannes!

From May 20-24, you will find back2back fashiontv events: from model, nightlife, and photographer awards to round-the-clock parties and celebrity shindigs -- all the while, watching all the red carpet arrivals LIVE.

We start Monday (May 20) with a 16 Year Anniversary party for FashionTV with celebrities and friends, and continue with the Nightlife Awards May 21, honoring the best clubs from around the world.

On May 22, we will be introducing to the public our very own film “Dubai Force” starring Jean-Claude van Damme. And on May 23 we will host the Photographers Awards, ending the festival with the prestigious Model Awards on May 24.
