Overview

Cristobal Balenciaga was surrounded by the world of fashion as a young child. His mother worked as a couturier, and young Balenciaga would spend many a day with her as she was worked away in her atelier. As a teenager Balenciaga was sent to Madrid where he studied fashion. In 1918, the Spanish-Basque fashion designer opened his first boutique in Spain and almost 20 years later – in 1937 – launched his own couture house in Paris. Balenciaga's designs would shape the next century of fashion through his knowledge of how to form the perfect marriage between the shape of a woman's body and his visions.
