Overview

Emanuel Ungaro was given his first sewing machine as a gift from his father, who was also a tailor. At the age of 22, Ungaro moved to Paris where he began working at Cristóbal Balenciaga's fashion house. In 1965, he established the House of Emanuel Ungaro in Paris, and in 1973 presented his first menswear collection. Asides from his hugely successful fashion lines, Ungaro can also be credited for some of the most popular fragrances of the 20th century. In 2005, Ungaro retired and sold his company to internet entrepreneur Asim Abdullah for $84 million. Following his retirement, the fashion house has seen many creative directors come and go, resulting in the brand's RTW collections losing money in recent years. The less expensive Ungaro lines and fragrances still remain very popular on the high street.
