Overview

The talented French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, never studied fashion. A natural talent, he simply started sending his sketches to famous couture stylists. Top designer Pierre Cardin was impressed by the move and hired young Gaultier as his assistant in 1970. In 1976, Gaultier launched his first individual collection. Gaultier was mostly influenced by streetwear and managed to create high-end couture outfits that always had a unique and playful twist. Jean Paul Gaultier’s fashion shows were and still are controversial and unusual. He usually likes to play with traditional gender roles on his catwalk shows, and often uses unconventional models for his exhibitions, like full-figured women, and heavily tattooed models.
