Overview

Dame Vivienne Westwood began to build a reputation for herself in the ’70s, when she teamed up with music entrepreneur, Malcolm McLaren, and together opened SEX boutique -- a punk fashion store on London’s exclusive King’s Road. Her international fame arrived, when McLaren became manager of punk band the Sex Pistols, who would wear Westwood and McLaren’s designs. She showed her first collection in 1981, entitled “Pirate.”

Designer Facts

Cutting-edge and yet classic, Westwood is one of the most famous and influential designers of the late-twentieth century. She has become synonymous with her Englishness which is translated through her use of traditional fabrics, punk attitude, and daring nonconformity: keeping her designs easily distinguishable and helping to retain her reputation as the Queen of Cool.

Top Facts:

  • In 1962, Vivienne married Derek Westwood and made her own wedding dress for the ceremony.
  • In the ’90s Westwood designed nine-inch heeled shoes. And famously, supermodel Naomi Campbell fell during the show, whilst presenting her sky-high platforms at Paris Fashion Week in 1993.
  • In 2006, Westwood received a DBE in Her Majesty’s New Year's Honors List "for services to fashion," and has twice-earned the title of British Designer of the Year.
  • In the “Sex and the City” (2008) movie, Carrie Bradshaw receives a wedding dress made by Westwood, and decides to wear it on her wedding day. In reality however, Westwood walked out of the London premiere after 10 minutes, because she was unimpressed with the styling.
  • Westwood is widely known as a political activist, campaigning for her “Climate Revolution,” which often features in her newer collections.
