Max Mara Fall 2012: Sailor Suiting + Military Motifs at Milan Fashion Week (Full Show)

MILAN - The first thing you might be asking yourself after taking in the MaxMara show for Fall/Winter 2012-2013 at Milan Fashion Week is: why do the models all look like men? And while this is an important question to ask--the brand may argue its only in the name of art (and their theme for this season. All signs point to military.) MaxMara is already known for strict and streamlined sportswear, but this was far more utilitarian than what we're used to. Apparently the brand was inspired by Querelle, a film directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder centered around a sailor who is also a theme and a murderer. We were scratching our heads because this was nothing like anything MaxMara had done before. But that doesn't mean it didn't work. They focused on suits and outerwear, a MaxMara signature, but made sure to point out the nautical stripes and sailor pants to play out the "sailor" theme. Coats were abundant, but also oversize volumes, a constant trend during all the fashion weeks this season.
