Ralph Lauren Fall/Winter 2012/13 Show at New York Fashion Week NYFW

NEW YORK - We figured All-American designer Ralph Lauren dipped into American history to come up with the vibrant 1920s theme of his Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection. And then we heard the Downton Abbey soundtrack in the background and wondered why he decided to go British. Not surprisingly, though, Downton Abbey was more of a contextual element to the collection, putting it in the context of what is popular today.
The show was not really English at all. The first half of the show dipped into menswear-inspired suits, a consistent Fall favorite and something that would probably have been popular among the feminists who wanted to wear pants in the 20s and 30s. They came in browns, tweeds, argyles, and were topped with bowler hats, top hats, and cloches--perhaps an ode to The Great Gatsby, which is currently being made into a movie. Glen plaid, houndstooth, and velvet were also on the agenda. And then came the flapper-inspired numbers and the sleek gowns in bursts of colors--those were the provocative ladies of that era who wanted to make their own statement in a sexy way.
